Oliver stared at the people sprawled out on the floor. “Someone just threw some powder at them, and now they’re all knocked out cold. Are you sure this isn’t poison?”
He probably hadn’t seen his own well-trained team drop like a sack of potatoes before. Honestly, it looked exactly like poisoning. If it wasn’t, then what else could possibly explain it?
“I don’t think so,” the doctor replied, sounding a little unsure himself. He knelt down and checked each person carefully, then shook his head. “Nope, they’re just asleep. Out like a light, but definitely just sleeping.”
“So, not poisoned?” Oliver asked, raising an eyebrow. “That’s pretty impressive, actually. Puts regular anesthetics to shame.”
The doctor nodded. “Yeah, whoever did this didn’t use poison. It’s more like some kind of super sleeping powder.”
“So, they’ll be okay?” Oliver was getting more and more intrigued by Calliope. She’d just made his men crash like they’d been up all night at a frat party.
“Yeah, they should be fine,” the doctor assured him. “But it’s chilly tonight. If they stay on the floor like that, they’ll probably catch a cold. Best to throw a blanket over them.”
Oliver glanced at the doctor. “Then go ahead and do it.”
The doctor blinked in surprise, but he did as he was told, grabbing some spare quilts from the closet.
Meanwhile, Calliope had already made her way home. She glanced down at the little vial of sleep powder in her pocket—a concoction she’d put together herself, something like a souped-up sedative. One sprinkle, and people were out faster than after Thanksgiving dinner.
She’d brought it along today since she’d needed it for Horatio’s surgery. Never imagined she’d end up using it on Oliver and his crew.
Once she got home, she sent for Damien. Damien had left a few people at the hospital to keep an eye on the Jewell family, but he himself had already returned to the Myers estate.
Calliope sat across from him, her expression serious.
